You’ve been missing one or more teeth for a while now, and it’s starting to really get to you. You miss the crunchy and chewy foods you used to enjoy all the time. You can’t remember what it’s like to not be self-conscious about the gaps in your smile. Good thing there’s a way to fix both of those problems with dental implants. Read on to learn all about them, including the two types of implants.
How Do Dental Implants Work?
Dental implants are metal posts, typically made of titanium, that are placed into the jaw to hold a replacement tooth, bridge, or even dentures in place. Whether you have lost one tooth or several teeth, dental implants are usually the best option, as they replace not only the crown, or the top part of the tooth, but the root as well. Replacing the root helps prevent your jawbone from shrinking, which keeps your face looking young. Implants also help keep gum disease at bay, because they fill the gaps in the mouth where infection is likely to occur.
What Are the 2 Types of Dental Implants?
The two kinds of dental implants are:
- Endosteal: These implants are shaped like screws and are placed directly into the jawbone through surgery. They are the most common kind of implant, and can be used to support a crown, bridge, or dentures.
- Subperiosteal: These are placed on top of the jaw with metal posts that come through the gums to hold a restoration. If you are unable to wear traditional dentures, then subperiosteal implants may be right for you.
Are Dental Implants Right for Me?
You would be an ideal candidate for dental implants if you:
- Don’t smoke or chew tobacco
- Have enough healthy jawbone tissue, or can undergo a bone graft
- Don’t have diabetes
- Don’t have any diseases that compromise the immune system
- Have excellent general and oral health
- Are willing to dedicate months to the healing process
